S’pore tourists flock to Japan, Hong Kong & Taiwan amid easing curbs

Across Singapore, airlines are adding more flights and travel agencies are witnessing more tour package bookings to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan, as easing border restrictions throughout these popular destinations have revived tourist demand.

Starting November, Singaporean budget airline, Scoot, will be flying to Osaka every day. Earlier the frequency of flights was five times a week. Scoot will also introduce seasonal non-stop flights to and from Sapporo and Singapore between November and February.

The frequency of Scoot’s Tokyo flights via Taipei will also be increased to daily from October-end, and its thrice-a-week flights to Sapporo, with a Taipei layover, will restart from November as well.

A company spokesperson stated that the airline will operate 18 flights to Taipei weekly, adding that the three destinations are much loved by its customers and expect an ‘encouraging demand’ for flights.

While COVID-19 restrictions on foreign visitors in Japan will be lifted from 11th October, in Taiwan the mandatory quarantine for visitors will end from 13th October. Meanwhile, Hong Kong already ended its mandatory quarantine requirements on 26th September and has further lifted tough travel restrictions that it implemented throughout the pandemic.

Hong Kong’s flag carrier Cathay Pacific Airways also saw an uptick in flights to Singapore. Next month, the airline will be adding over 200 pairs of flights from Hong Kong to Manila, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Incheon, and Osaka. It will also add long-haul destinations, such as Canada and Australia.

Daily flights to Tokyo will resume from 1st November while the frequency of flights to Sapporo will increase to four times weekly from 1st December.

Meanwhile, travel agencies are recording a rise in tour package sales to Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Japan.

Singapore-based Chan Brothers Travel saw an uptick in travel inquiries with regards to the three countries, with Japan topping its website search following the announcement of relaxed curbs.

The travel agency is planning to add more group tours to Japan, and has already introduced new travel packages to popular Japanese cities, like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, this week. It is also planning to launch tours to Hong Kong and Taiwan soon.

Another travel agency, CTC Travel, stated that overall demand for the three countries has jumped 100% since last month.
