Kraft Heinz pledges to reduce plastic usage and enhance sustainability

The America food giant Kraft Heinz Company has reportedly made it to the headlines with the announcement of reducing the use of virgin plastic weighing around 100 lbs by the end of 2030. This move is a significant step toward decreasing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting more sustainable packaging options.

To achieve this objective, Kraft Heinz plans to use recycled content in place of virgin plastic. The company is actively collaborating with various organizations and countries to increase the use of recycled content in its packaging. In the US, it aims to replace 15% of its PET rigid plastic packaging with post-consumer recycled content by 2025.

The company is also set to employ material elimination and reduction methods. They are looking for ways to use lesser plastic for their packing solutions, such as removing any unwanted plastic components. For instance, the company introduced an eco-friendly Heinz multipack with paperboard sleeve intending to replace the plastic shrink wrap across the UK, resulting in plastic of over 1 million lbs being eliminated in 2022.

Sources familiar to the matter cite that the another crucial focus area for Kraft Heinz is exploring material alternatives. The company is actively researching the use of alternative materials like fiber-based packaging for future packaging formats. As part of this effort, they are piloting a renewable, paper-based, and recyclable bottle for Heinz Tomato Ketchup that is made from sustainably sourced wood pulp.

Moreover, in Canada, the company replaced the flexible plastic Nabob coffee bags which are non-recyclable with recyclable canisters made from 80% renewable paper fiber, resulting in the elimination of approximately 2.5 million plastic bags annually.

Rashida La Lande, the executive vice president, global general counsel, and chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer at Kraft Heinz, emphasized that to achieve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals, including reaching net-zero GHG emissions, the company is investing in innovative technologies and partnerships. These initiatives focus on redesigning packaging, eliminating unnecessary plastic, increasing the use of recycled content, and promoting reuse models, she added.
