Samsung SDI Co. Ltd. recently announced that it has opened its first research and development facility in the U.S. to maintain technological competitiveness in the rapidly expanding electric vehicles market.

The Boston center, also known as SDI R&D America, will concentrate on developing new battery-related technologies and will collaborate with regional colleges and companies that have been actively working on lithium-ion battery tech and other next-generation innovations.

Samsung’s new R&D center in the U.S. comes after the opening of a similar research facility in Munich on July 1st. Both facilities aim to foster cutting-edge battery manufacturing infrastructure and technology for the South Korean company.

Additionally, to increase its production capacity, the Samsung SDI is also looking to construct a second battery manufacturing facility in Malaysia and another in China to have a strong R&D network across important markets as well as attract more international talent.

For a while now, Samsung SDI is making substantial efforts to maintain its position and have a significant part in the global supply chain for the EV era when it announced that it is creating new batteries for well-known manufacturers like Tesla and BMW.  The company has invested a total of USD 670.38 million in research & development alone last year.

Other Samsung divisions have established partnerships with automakers like Tesla and BMW to provide them with supplies like camera systems and displays for in-car navigation as well as entertainment systems.

Choi Yoon-ho, the CEO of Samsung SDI, mentioned that by utilizing cutting-edge technology created by talented individuals around the world, the company is further enhancing its product quality by establishing R&D facilities abroad, starting with those in the US and Europe.
