NTT DOCOMO and SKT to jointly advance 5G, metaverse & digital media

Japanese mobile carrier NTT DOCOMO has reportedly agreed to collaborate with South Korean telecom firm SK Telecom (SKT) to enhance their respective global communications-infrastructure technologies and smart-life businesses.

The two firms will discuss jointly producing original content for their video distribution platforms and expanding their global presence by leveraging their video-business synergies. They will also look into opportunities for joint production of virtual content, such as 3D models and virtual cities.

As per sources, they will also talk about long-term cooperation between their respective platforms.

For telecom and infrastructure technologies, SKT and NTT DOCOMO will explore cooperation toward advancing 5G commercial services that the two firms already offer, targeting Open RAN/vRAN, energy-efficient networks, millimeter-wave utilization, and 5G Stand Alone.

Moreover, the two will align their timelines and concepts for early deployment of 6G via joint R&D and standardization, and begin testing the same by next year.

These efforts are expected to bolster the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) concept that is being promoted by DOCOMO’s parent firm, NTT.

SKT and NTT DOCOMO will collaborate with the IOWN Global Forum, aimed at boosting communication and network-infrastructure technologies that are able to meet the technological challenges and societal needs of the future.

Motoyuki Ii, President and CEO of NTT DOCOMO said that by combining the two firms’ technological capabilities and years of expertise, the firm hopes to deliver new services with which global customers can experience new forms of excitement.

Ryu Young-sang, President and CEO of SK Telecom, noted that the collaboration holds significant meaning as it is a cooperation between the representative mobile operators of the two countries.

Ryu added that by working together in the field of future information and communications technology (ICT), the two will work on offering tangible results and driving global innovation in the sector.

Being the world-leading telecom carriers having a shared vision, SKT and DOCOMO will collaborate on global technologies and services and jointly strengthen competition.
