Clean Authority of Tokyo orders MHIEC to renovate its Minato WtE plant

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co. Ltd., has reportedly announced that it has received orders from the Clean Authority of Tokyo for the refurbishment of its Minato Waste-to-Energy (WtE) facility.

The Clean Authority of Tokyo was founded in 2000 to effectively handle the waste treatment operations for 23 wards in the city of Tokyo. The organization is situated in the main government building in Chiyoda Ward and manages 21 plants across the city, comprising facilities that are currently under renovation.

For the uninitiated, the Minato WtE Plant was designed and constructed by the MHI, and currently has a waste treatment capacity of 900 tons per day. The plant comprises three stoker type incinerators and related equipment, each having a capacity of 300 tons per day, and capable of generating up to 22 MW of electricity. According to the order from the Clean Authority of Tokyo, MHEIC will renovate and improve these stoker type incinerators and related equipment, and increase the energy efficiency, and extend the service life of the facility.

The contract involves a transaction value of ¥7.6 billion and the refurbishment is scheduled to be completed by January 2023. In 2016, MHIEC had received a similar order from the Clean Authority of Tokyo for extending the service life of its Ariake WtE Plant over the next three years.

As reported, the contract demands the refurbishment of the superannuated main equipment at the Minato facility, including the incinerator furnace, refuse feeder, as well as the equipment utilized for ash treatment, scrubbers, bag filters, power generators, boilers, steam condensers, water supply systems, and electric instrumentation. The contract further involves the installation of inverters and high-efficiency motors for electric components for the enhancement of energy efficiency.

Of late, operators have started to increasingly opt for the renovation of WtE plants with an aim to reduce the environmental impact and increase the service life of these facilities.
