Indian telecom major, Bharti Airtel Limited, has reportedly announced that it has entered into an agreement with Amazon Web Services for the development of its cloud business intending to furnish a broader range of products to its business customers. Airtel Cloud presently delivers cloud and data centre services to governments and companies via various partnerships.
According to Puneet Chandok, the President of India and South Asia, Amazon Internet Services, the companies have the potential to jointly develop a set of really differentiated cloud products and serve clients at scale. He has further stated that the company brings over 175 services to the table and supports any workload on the cloud, and has the largest community of consumers.
As per sources, the collaboration allows Amazon Web Services to gain direct access to Bharti’s more than 2,500 large business clients and over a million emerging enterprises. The partnership also intends to benefit Airtel’s customers for obtaining sales and support from both the companies, and effectively demonstrates Airtel’s push towards building enterprises beyond its telecom venture.
The two companies had entered into a similar agreement in 2015. Presently, both the organizations intend to work together towards the development of new services and helping existing customers to move to Airtel Cloud. The companies also plan to build new products comprising security services, data analytics, and artificial intelligence amongst others.
The deal reportedly supports AWS towards the expansion of its dominance in India and comes after a similar agreement between Reliance Jio and Microsoft regarding the sale of cloud services to small businesses, the previous year, where the two companies announced a 10-year collaboration intending to serve millions of customers. Agreements with carriers were very frequent a decade ago in India when tech giants had started rushing to amass subscribers in the country.
